The history of Stockholm Marathon

1979

Success Right From the Start
An article about the New York City Marathon in the American sportsmagazine Sports Illustrated brought the inspiration to create the Stockholm Marathon. The Swedish sport journalist, and dedicated representative of the Hässelby Athletics club, Anders Olsson read the article one gloomy November day. Ten months later, on August 4, the first Stockholm Marathon was inaugurated by 2.000 runners which made Stockholm the biggest marathon in Europe in 1979. The race was an unexpected success and got great media coverage.

FACTS
• 2 155 entrants (2 086 men, 69 women) from 9 nations. 1 946 starters. 1 799 finishers.
• Results: MEN: 1) Jukka Toivola, FIN, 2.17,35. 2) Barry Watson, GBR, 2.19,43. 3) Hans Jonsson, SWE, 2.20,31. WOMEN: 1) Heide Brenner, BRD, 2.47,06. 2) Christina Johansson, SWE, 2.54,35. 3) Siv Larsson, SWE, 2.59.04.

1980
Mamma Mia, What a Run!
4500 eager runners started two minutes early without noticing of the missing starting gun (it was left behind in the head quarters’ safe!) Eventual winner Jeff Wells dashed off after seven kilometres. Ten police officers accompanied him on motorbikes. Abba-star Björn Ulvéus finished in 3.23.54. How many of today’s international pop stars would manage to beat that?

1981
Heavy Weight Champion
Two champions highlighted the third Stockholm Marathon. Bill Rodgers, multiple winner of the Boston and New York City Marathons was outstanding. But an old man weighing 250 pounds gathered even more cheers: Swedish sports hero Ingemar Johansson who became Heavyweight World Champion in 1959. He crossed the finish line in 4.40.12.
